Also, do I need to cut away the plastic covering to the wires before I plug them in? Maybe someone could take a pic of their exterior telephone box so I can look at it and mimic their wiring. Any help is appreciated.

The wiring should be disconnected from the public network at the dmark to prevent any issues with signals coming from outside of your house phone noise, lightning, etc.
